It has been seen over the past several years that every Pakistani government resorts to an increase in development spending during election time. This results in the worsening of the budget deficit crisis and subsequently the party that is elected has to face the adverse ramifications of such a policy by the previous government. The new government tries to contain the budget deficit for the first couple of years but then also resorts to the same election time spending as the previous government did.
This cycle results in the persistent presence and worsening of the budget deficit and the people of Pakistan have to suffer the consequences in the long term in terms of reduction in the spending on health care and education and an increase in the spending on the repayment of debt and interest payments. This time around the PML-N government is also resorting to such tactics and by indulging in such tactics ensuring that the next elected government will have to face a tough time on the economic front especially the Government of Punjab.
